SCHOOL
HISTORY
Guardian
Angels School was established in 1883. While
Father Horn was pastor of St. Mary's Parish, he made
plans for building a parochial school. In 1883,
the building of the school began and the cornerstone was
laid on Nov. 1. After Father Horn's death, Father
Ruesing became the resident pastor, and he completed the
building of the school. On March 5, 1885, the
school was opened, and four Sisters from the Franciscan
Sisters of Christian Charity arrived to teach the ninety
pupils enrolled. Furnishings for the school were
obtained from a parish fair which raised $1,500.
When Rev.
Ferdinand Pietz became pastor in 1914, one of his first
tasks was to set up plans for the construction of a new
school because the conditions required one. The
new building had a spacious auditorium, which had a
seating capacity of 300, an assembly room, school rooms,
library, dining room and a kitchen. It was
constructed at a cost of $100,000. On Sunday,
September 1, 1918, the new school was dedicated to the
Guardian Angels. Enrollment in the new school was
222 in grades 1-12.
In 1951
the new pastor, Rev. H.J. Kaup, transformed the gym in
the school house into six modern classrooms. Rev.
Kaup then took on his next big project of constructing a
new auditorium, which was to be used as a parish hall
and gym.
The Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity from
Manitowoc, Wisconsin continue to staff the school along
with many fine lay teachers.
